In February, we began with the DALI4US small-scale experimentation of introducing data literacy education to upper primary education in Europe.

In the Loka Črnomelj primary school in Slovenia, Prof. Dr. Janez Demšar from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science, first demonstrated a data exploration activity with 5th-grade students, who learned about prediction models and classification trees with gnomes of different professions. It was great to see how engaged the students were when formulating rules and building a simple machine-learning algorithm and model.

The second session involved approximately 20 teachers, who tested an activity on the topic of recommender systems and participated in an evaluation discussion. They learned hands-on about methods to introduce various topics from AI into the classroom and integrate them with different school subjects and the curriculum.

After the session, virtually all the teachers expressed interest in being part of a follow-up, i.e., a 5-week learning process where they examine, study, and adapt for their own use five different data exploration scenarios. The key part is testing at least one of the activities in the classroom and reporting on the insights of the experiment and the end of this 5-week phase.
