Slovenia, 12th – 13th March 2024

The first teachers’ workshops in the project were designed to pilot the DALI4US teacher training focused on developing data literacy with the help of Orange Data Mining (open-source software). The five workshops held by Blaž Zupan and Janez Demšar from the University of Ljubljana involved ten teachers from Luxembourg, Ireland, and Slovenia, and covered:

  • Computer science elements of data literacy, especially data analytics. Through practical activities, the participants were developing knowledge and skills in classification, logistic regression, artificial neural networks, image and text analytics, basic models, clustering, and repetition. These activities, intertwined with discussion among the participants, encouraged the development of positive attitudes towards data literacy in education, such as curiosity, engagement, and self-confidence.
  • Broader general skills in data literacy like storytelling, problem-solving, investigation, interpretation, sharing, and making predictions.
  • Testing and development of classroom learning scenarios closely connected to real-life situations, for example in nature (animals, houses), society (socio-economic development of countries), and in school subjects (maths, geography, history, biology, art).

The teacher training took place in-person in the Thermana Laško Congress Centre, in a workshop format, using the Orange Data Mining programme as a tool.

The project partners and teachers were also welcomed by the Slovenian state secretary Janja Zupančič who expressed support for the project and discussed with the teacher trainers and the partners consortium the aim and expected results of DALU4US, as well as the needs for their successful implementation and introduction into the education system through efficient learning scenarios, tools, and methodology, new curricula and supporting legislation.
